FEAR
April.25.2021 - TRM152 Final Project
My project draws inspiration from Joiri Minaya’s work, where she wrapped statues of Christopher Columbus in tropical-patterned fabrics, effectively connecting the elements she wanted to express in an enveloping manner. This idea reminds me of the sense of envelopment in daily life during the present COVID-19 era.
In my project, I aim to use two main elements symbolic of the COVID-19 era: masks and medicine. I want to use the wrapping technique to connect these elements with everyday items, reflecting the impact of the pandemic on our lives.
I created a series of eight photos, editing them by cutting and pasting elements from expired medication and pill boxes onto previously used medical masks. This approach ensures that no medication or masks are wasted. I intend to express how our communication is hindered by masks, even though they protect us.
From the beginning of 2020 to this project (April 2021), I have felt that COVID-19 has surrounded and enclosed people worldwide. I felt depressed and helpless because I could not return to my home in China, and no one knew when this would end. Masks and medicine help protect us from many dangers, but they cannot change those who cling to prejudice. I hope people will remember this period, as the development of the virus is beyond the control of ordinary individuals.
